How many generations are in 800 years?

  • According to this website http://home.san.rr.com/artist/16.html 800 years held approximately 32 generations ("control F" to search, then type "32 generations ago (aprox 800 years)" and you will see where it says this). This was with the limited medicine and the life expectancy being about 40, if that. Now with American life expectancy being almost double, women are getting married at a later age (instead of an average age of 14 like in medieval times, the average age of marriage for american women in 2008 is mid 30's). So the average age of women getting married and subsequently giving birth is rising because of increasing life expectancy. Because of this, the number of 32 generations in 800 years is now obsolete. So what do you think the new number would be for how many generations are contained in 800 years?

  • the length of years that make up a generation is determined by the age of the father when his first born child arrives, so in different communities and cultures, the age lengthens. for example : in my work in the African-American communities in South Chicago, and Gary ,IN , it was not unusual to see 32 year old grandmothers. but in the caucasian suburbs, many fathers were marrying in their earl 30's, and waiting several years to begin families. the average is probably still about 30 years per generation, over all.

  • I would say 40. The average age women have kids is probably around 20 years old. 800 divided by 20 is 40. Thus, there are 40 generations in 800 years.

  • well in my opinion in a hundred year span there would be about 4 generations so I'd still say 32

  • None and an infinite number.

I hate generations thinking. They are at best mushy categories of socially constructed meaning, not absolute biological categories. We are not like cicadas that emerge every 13, 15, 17, 19, or 23 years in one mass orgy of eating and copulating.

None: generations are not a biological category.
Infinite: since they are really a cultural category, there could be a near infinite number in 800 years.

Someone is born in 1940. Too early for Baby Boom. Too late to be greatest generation. What are they?

The baby boomers created the 60s, right? Hippies, and the counter culture and the civil rights movement, right? Except the Nixon and Reagan coalitions were made up of people form the same birth cohorts. My point? There is as much or more heterogeneity within a cohort as between them.

I am Gen X and clearly I am bitter about it. Most people don't even know what Gen X is anymore.
