Need new Dedicated server HELP

By webmaster | March 11, 2010

  • I need a new Dedicated HOST seems that Communitech promises the world have a contract that promissed the world and now they are going back on what they are saying. I have had nothing but problems from day one with there servers. I still am awating my correct processor for my system. I pay for a dual 700 and I get a dual 600 they say that the chips are on bak order and I have to wait. But in the mean time here is a server for youto work with.

I WOULD AVOID THEM LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!

Does anyone have any suggestions as to who I could use. Someone that is with in the same price structure that I was in?

    Here is what I had.

    Dual 700 pIII
    512mb Ram
    16 ip's
    30gb HDD
    RH 6.2

    Price: 399 a month

ANything would be better than communitech. I can look at going up in price, but not by much.

    TIA

  • ok just take over the thread :) sheesh

    ;)

  • oh your shop.. we think alike.. http://www.sciencefictionshop.com will be mine at some point :)

I am hoping to make a nice mySQL database for it, with the image links, url for various affiliate programs (multiple countries etc) space for a review, ratings etc all that sort of thing. So i actually have an updated directory. Also means that when i move to selling stuff through it myself (longer term plan) it will be easy to do.. so have a mixture of selling amazon.com stuff as well as custom made coffee mugs/posters etc.

Out of interest, how many posts are you getting per day on average? hehe it's lower cause i am not serving all my images for the forum from the rackspace server and i added the modrewrite to prevent people hot linking my smilies :)

last month i averaged 1,000 - 1,100 posts/day, previous month before that was 450/day and now i have no idea but it's above 1,000 posts/day - a few days ago i reached my first 1,000 registered members !

problem is i spend all of today moving around 8,000 posts due to a few recent trolls and spammers :( why do they need to ruin people's forums :(

i expect my bandwidth costs will rise more once i get my new site out - preview - http://fananime.com/onlinestore/

  • that is probably better then but i am doing ok for now. That cost of the server $300 per month includes 75GB so basically the server is really only the cost of the bandwidth. If i need to get more than 75GB i might as well just get another server instead!

Who do you use for image dumping. I was wondering if there are any reliable virtual hosts out there that don't care about a 40GB traffic so long you don't use server resources much, is that what you do?

Also interesting idea. Can you set up images so if the first one fails it loads the second like:

else now that would be good :)

  • how much is it?

for me it is quite cheap, $3/GB and we get 75GB free. But we are on 95% billing which is not so good really (although not quite as bad for me as others as our site is more global..).

Does anyone else use 95% bandwidth billing or is it average or total?

I do not see that my bandwidth usage is going to hit that mark every day as of yet :) Currently at CT I am getting an average of 26000 unique hits a day and my bandwidth is about .3gb a day. I know that I will be growing soon and that my bandwidth usage will increase with the addition of my other sites.

I will ask Chris about the version of MySQL or if he cathes this thread. Chris has been real great asset for me on getting my issues resolved on my CT server.

which site eva2000.com or animeboards.net ? eva2000.com ain't hosted on rackspace yet cause it will add another 40GB/month to my rackspace bill :(

it's good to plan for the increased bandwidth, as any forum owner would expect their forums to take off :D

the best thing is you upgrade bandwidth as you go on rackspace.

as to the image serving i am doing it from another sit ei have which i have unlimited web space and bandwidth from simplenet.com/Yahoo web services... i never changed to their new plans as it would of limited me to 30GB/month :)

as to the store, we do think alike - cause i am also doing a search on t-shirt offerings for my Animeboards forums members - i looked at cafepress.com and iprint.com but shipping to Australia is expensive.. just found out one of my member's cousin owns a printing company and could possible do shirts but in Sweeden the prices would still be expensive :(

sorry for getting this thread off topic

  • I went and signed up for Rackspace. I liked what I have read here and what I saw from there site.

So I guess I am now one that joined the bandwagon.

Happy soon will be transfering the site over. Now comes the big mess. :)

Does anyone else use 95% bandwidth billing or is it average or total? it's real burstable bandwidth at overage charges of US$4/GB but buy in advance amounts range from US$2.7 - 3/GB depending on the amount of bandwidth you buy.

    I purchased 50GB/month.

  • OK thanks Eva.

Ohh they asked me when I signed up for the server who refered me I told them that you did so you might be getting something for it. Hope you do not mind. :)

They were really cool on the phone and worked with me in regards to the set up. How do you feel about there service? I have only seen good things about them.

Eagerly awaiting the release of 2.0 now :)

  • Oh and you can see why people will be annoyed. 8,000 of probably the top A1 email marketing dream emails! People with a dedicated server, there email address i am guessing is pretty valuable. I would not be surprised if they all get heaps of spam within a few weaks once someone buys them.

  • sorry.. sort of overtook your thread there. I assume you are asking chris schreiber, as i have no idea :)

  • ok well I DLed this version:

    mysql-3.23.27-beta.tar.gz

I followed the instructions on the page you had given me previously in another thread and all went well. Now I am in the process of uploading the files for the board :)

Hopefully all will go well. Crossing fingers, knocking on wood and looking for that 4 leaf clover

  • that's nice... i am an inactive rackspace affiliate but it ain't right promoting it on forums :) i hope you said my animeboards site ... i'll let you know if i get anything :)

beside the mysql mix up, the higher total costs when bandwidth consumption is increasing (1.5GB/day for me :( ) - suppose 24/7 service comes at a higher price :).

one problem is rackspace just a few days ago made a very big boo boo and it a new newsletter released all their clients email addresses - there was an apology and the problem was fixed, but some people weren't happy with it.

For me it wasn't a big issue for my email address, which is already in plain view of 5,000 - 8,000 visitors/day on my a few of my sites.

  • Thats could not bother me about the email address'. I could see why they would be a little upset though.

  • Which one should they use? I requested at the time of the build that they install the latest version of mySQL.

I saw three builds for Linux
Linux (Intel libc6 systems) [pc-linux-gnu-i686] -- this should be for the intel 686 instruction set

Linux (IA64) [unknown-linux-gnu-ia64] -- this should be for the true 64bit OS if I am not mistaken

    and
Linux (Alpha) [unknown-linux-gnu-alphaev6] -- this should be for the alpha processors.

is there another build? I would assume that the first one would be the correct build for an Intel or AMD processor. If it is not please let me know. I do not want to have to reinstall MySQL

Any other quarks that I shuld be aware of?

I requested that the latest versions of software be installed as well.

    PHP4.0.3pl1
ProFTP cause of the security holes that WUFTP has
    Apache build 1.3.14
    Sendmail 8.11.1

SHould I look at anything else?

  • Just be sure rackspace install the correct version of MySQL for your cpu. Rackspace installed the wrong one for my AMD cpu - all cpus from 600 - 1000 mhz are AMD Durons or Athlons, Dual cpus are P3s.

  • So Chris...any thoughts on which version on MySQL I should use for the AMD Processor?

  • i'd ask chris what i have now, cause he helped me get the right version installed...

    John-

Yes I would not install any of the pre-compiled versions of MySQL since they are all compiled on Intel processors. Instead I would download the source code (I used 3.23.27 on Eva's server) and compile it your machine. If you need a hand with this, just let me know.

    -Chris
